How should I consider TOG when dressing my child?

Published TOG ratings (with appropriate rounding) should be considered in conjunction with our specific clothing guides (found online and on pack) and are from test results that we believe reflect the appropriate TOG when used in conjunction with our clothing guides. Test methods are EN ISO 11092, ASTM 1291(modified to the same parameters as EN ISO 11092) and ISO 5085-1.

We believe that our TOG ratings, together with our clothing guides, help parents and carers make the best decision on how to dress their child at different room temperatures. We also provide guidance on how the parent or carer can check if the child is too hot or too cold. This is important in empowering the parent or carer to decide what is best for their child. All children are different.

The number of clothing layers required may vary according to a child’s health, their physiology the room temperature, the outside temperature and other factors. The care-giver must determine what is suitable. We do not provide medical advice. The TOG rating (with appropriate rounding) is obtained using any one, or combination, of the below globally recognised test methods, EN ISO 11092, ASTM 1291(modified to the same parameters as EN ISO 11092) and ISO 5085-1.

Clothing Guide

Our aim at LOVE TO DREAM is to empower parents to choose the right products from our range that best suit their children’s needs. Every child and everybody feels hot and cold differently, ambient temperatures fluctuate, the child’s general health and wellbeing will impact body temperature and different clothing and sleepwear layer combinations will differ in their thermal effectiveness. As these factors make it challenging to give absolute and definitive advice to parents and carers, the clothing guide should be used only as a general guide. The parent or carer is best suited to determine the right sleepwear and clothing combinations for the child.

0.2 TOG - Ideal for WARM room temperatures between 24°C and 27°C

1.0 TOG - Ideal for MODERATE/MILD room temperatures between 20°C to 24°C

2.5 TOG - Ideal for COOL room temperatures between 16°C to 20°C

3.5 TOG - Ideal for COLD room temperatures below 16°C

The table below provides you with the guidelines around how to dress your baby/toddler based on the room temperatures.

The table is only a guide. All babies are different. The number of clothing layers may vary according to a baby’s health, their physiology, and the room temperature in the room. The caregiver must determine what is suitable. We recommend that carers always monitor the temperature of the room & the child’s comfort. It is important to check your baby regularly to ensure that they are comfortable and that they do not overheat.

Note: It is important to check your baby regularly to ensure that they are comfortable and that they do not overheat.

STAGE 1: SWADDLE UP™

Why SWADDLE UP™?

Medical research suggests that swaddling is beneficial in helping newborns to sleep better. Swaddling a baby may calm their 'startle reflex' which wakes them up & disturbs their sleep. Our patented, award-winning SWADDLE UP™ helps baby to settle quickly & establish a peaceful sleep routine. Importantly, it completely removes the need for loose blankets in the cot/crib, making it a safer option for babies.

Unlike traditional swaddles that keep a baby's arms by their side or across their chest, the unique ARMS UP™ design of our SWADDLE UP™ has patented wings that allow a baby to sleep in their natural ARMS UP™ position. This means your baby can easily touch their face & suck on their hands & fingers for true SELF-SOOTHING™.

What is SELF-SOOTHING™?

A natural way babies settle themselves to sleep is by sucking on their hands or gently rubbing their cheeks. This is called SELF-SOOTHING™. This hand sucking can also help develop mouth muscles which aid in feeding, speech development & their natural rooting reflex.
SWADDLE UP™ has been designed to allow babies to safely suck on their hands for SELF-SOOTHING™.
SELF-SOOTHING = MORE SLEEP

Why ARMS UP™?

SWADDLE UP™ is specifically designed to let your baby sleep in a natural ARMS UP™ position. This allows them to bring their hands to mouth for SELF-SOOTHING™ during sleep time, resulting in more sleep for everyone.

Can my baby use the LOVE TO DREAM SWADDLE UP™ from day one?

Yes, this is actually the best time to start. If your baby weighs between 2.2-3.8kg/5-8.5lbs at birth please choose the SWADDLE UP™ in size Newborn.
If your baby weighs between 3.5-6kg/8-13lbs at birth, please choose the SWADDLE UP™ in size Small.

While there is some crossover in size, we highly recommend you do not move into size Small unless or until your baby is at the upper limit of size Newborn. Using a SWADDLE UP™ or any garment that is too big for your baby can be dangerous for your baby as excess fabric can be a hazard.

Is the SWADDLE UP™ healthy for your baby’s hip development?

Our SWADDLE UP and SWADDLE UP TRANSITION BAG/SUIT are acknowledged as a hip-healthy product by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute- their design allows the recommended flexion for hips & legs. Your baby's natural, safe sleep position is with their legs splayed in a frog-like position. The SWADDLE UP™ allows your baby to sleep in this position without restriction.

Why is there no quilting on the backside of the SWADDLE UP™ Warm and Extra Warm?

When babies are in our SWADDLE UP™ it is important that they sleep on their back to reduce the risk of SIDS. Therefore there is no need for quilting on the backside of the swaddle as babies back is in constant contact with the sheet/blanket of the cot/crib. This does not affect the warmth of the garment.
This will differ in our Stage 2 garments (SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT) as babies are now able to roll onto their stomach, and quilting is therefore needed on the backside too. The same applies to the Stage 3 LOVE TO DREAM SLEEP SUIT™.

Can my baby wear the SWADDLE UP™ in the capsule or car seat?

The travel slot was always intended for use in a stroller. It was not intended for use with car seats, baby capsules or infant seats, as it is not safe to swaddle your child in any way while using these. We take safety very seriously, and as we’ve been made aware that a number of parents unknowingly use the travel slot in an unsafe manner, we have made the decision to remove it completely from the SWADDLE UP™ products to prevent any confusion. If you have any questions regarding this, please reach out to our customer care team at:

What size SWADDLE UP™ should I buy?

For best fit result please select your SWADDLE UP™ sizing according to your child's weight not their age.
The SWADDLE UP™ range is available in four sizes: Newborn (suitable for 2.2-3.8kg/5-8.5lbs), Small (suitable for 3.5-6kg/8-13lbs), Medium (suitable for 6-8.5kg/13-19lbs) & Large (suitable for 8.5-11kg/19-24lbs).

My baby is growing so quickly. Can I just buy a bigger size SWADDLE UP™ & let him or her grow into it?

As tempting as it might be to buy a bigger size, unfortunately the answer is no. It is very important that you always purchase the correct size SWADDLE UP™ for your baby, based on their current weight. If you use a SWADDLE UP™ that is too big for your baby the neckline could be too loose, which can potentially be dangerous.

My baby’s legs touch the bottom of the garment – shall I move up to the next size?

If your baby’s legs touch the bottom of the SWADDLE UP™ but the fit across the body is correct, then keep using this Swaddle UP™ It is not too short! The length of the bag has been specially designed to be a little shorter so that – as your baby grows – they can push against the bottom of the bag. This pushing action and feeling ’the ends’ of the bag contribute to further SELF-SOOTHING™.

How many SWADDLE UPs do I need?

We recommend that you purchase at least two SWADDLE UPs™ in the appropriate size. If you own two then one can be in the wash while your baby is wearing the other one. It might even be helpful to consider having a third on hand to use in case of emergencies!

How do I care for the SWADDLE UP™ range?

Wash before first use. Close zippers before washing. Warm gentle machine wash in wash bag with similar colors. Do not soak. Do not bleach. Tumble dry on low (for warm garments: for quicker drying tumble dry inside out on second cycle). Warm iron if necessary. Do not iron zipper. Do not dry clean. Wash immediately after every use.

Is it unhygienic for my baby to suck their hands when they're covered in the SWADDLE UP™?

The SWADDLE UP™ is unique because it allows your baby access  his or her hands for self-soothing. Some babies love to suck on their hands as they fall asleep - unfortunately this does mean that the ‘wings’ of the garment can get a little wet.
Parents should wash any garment – swaddle or wrap – after use, if it is soiled. The same applies to the LOVE TO DREAM SWADDLE UP™. We recommend purchasing more than one so that you always have a clean SWADDLE UP™ while one is in the wash.

Is it safe to use a blanket over the SWADDLE UP™?

We recommend that it is safest to avoid all loose blankets in the cot and instead add extra layers underneath your SWADDLE UP™. Please refer to our guide on how to dress your baby.
If you do choose to use a blanket it is crucial that you follow Red Nose's guidelines in relation to using blankets in the cot: https://rednose.org.au/article/what-is-a-safe-sleeping-environment.

We recommend that it is safest to avoid all loose blankets in the cot and instead add extra layers underneath your SWADDLE UP™.

It's recommended that you follow First Candle guidelines in relation to using blankets in a crib. Do not put anything soft, loose or fluffy in your baby's sleep space. This includes pillows, blankets, comforters, soft or pillow-like bumpers, stuffed animals and other soft items. Use a sleep sack or other type sleeper instead of blankets to keep your baby warm and safe.

Is it safe to use a sleeping bag over the SWADDLE UP™?

It is not recommended to use a sleeping bag over a wrap or swaddle.

STAGE 2: TRANSITIONAL

Why TRANSITION BAG/SUIT?

As soon as a baby shows signs of rolling, parents must stop swaddling & transition their baby to 'arms-free' sleep. Our TRANSITION BAG or SUIT is the simplest solution to transition a baby from being swaddled to 'arms-free' - all while preserving their cherished sleep routine.

When should I stop swaddling my baby and transition?

Irrespective of which swaddling method you use, you must stop swaddling your baby as soon as he or she starts to show signs of being able to roll over independently. At this time, you must transition your baby out of swaddling into 'arms-free' sleeping.
Your baby's arms should not be restricted when they are able to roll over - this advice is the same for any form of swaddling you may be using. Around this time, you baby's startle reflex should have diminished.
The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT is a great way to prepare your baby for the transition from being swaddled to 'arms-free' independent sleep.

What's the easiest way to transition my baby?

If your baby has not shown signs of rolling yet, you can simply allow them to sleep in the SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT until they show signs of trying to roll. Once they show signs of trying to roll over, you must stop swaddling your baby and transition them. Start with one ARMS UP™ wing and one SELF-SOOTHING™ SLEEVE on (cuff folded over).
After several nights of your baby settling into this routine, remove the ARMS UP™ wing and start bedtime off with both SELF-SOOTHING™ SLEEVES zipped on (cuffs folded over). Once your baby has settled into a routine, you can open the cuffs for true arms-free sleep.
Some babies transition in a few nights, others can take a few weeks. The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT with SELF-SOOTHING™ SLEEVES is especially helpful for any baby who is having a harder time going from being swaddled to arms-free sleep.

How long will it take to transition my baby?

Every baby is different - some only take a couple of days to transition; some may take a little longer. It can be helpful to try starting your baby’s transition during his or her day sleeps. Or perhaps try waiting until your baby is asleep before removing a ‘wing’ from your SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT for the first time.

Is the SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT healthy for your baby’s hip development?

Our SWADDLE UP and SWADDLE UP TRANSITION BAG/SUIT are acknowledged as a hip-healthy product by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute- their design allows the recommended flexion for hips & legs. Your baby's natural, safe sleep position is with their legs splayed in a frog-like position. The SWADDLE UP™ Transition Bag & Suit allows your baby to sleep in this position without restriction

What size SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT should I buy?

For best fit result please select your SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT sizing according to your child's weight not their age.
The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT range is available in three sizes: Medium (suitable for 6-8.5kg/13-19lbs), Large (suitable for 8.5-11kg/19-24lbs) & XL (suitable for 11-14kg/24-31lbs).

Why are there so few options for the XL Transition Bags and Suits?

Due to lower demand for Transition Bags and Suits in the XL size (11-14kg/24-31lbs), we only make XL items in a handful of prints. Alternatively, you could also consider a Sleep Bag or Suit from our On-The-Move range, which is suitable for babies and toddlers from 6 months to 4 years.

How many SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAGs/SUITs do I need?

We recommend that you purchase at least two SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAGs/SUITs in the appropriate size. If you own two then one can be in the wash while your baby is wearing the other one. It might even be helpful to consider having a third on hand to use in case of emergencies!

My baby used SWADDLE UP™. Should I buy the SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT or SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG?

You can choose either! The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG is a '3-in-1', converting from Swaddle to Transition Bag to Sleep Bag once both wings are off.The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT is a '5-in-1' solution that can be used as a Swaddle Suit, Transition Suit, Sleep Suit, Play Suit and Travel Suit all in ONE.

My baby was swaddled arms down - which transition product should I buy?

You can try either! The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG or TRANSITION SUIT.

Can I use the SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT if my baby has been swaddled with arms down?

Absolutely. The SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT was specially created to help all babies transition to arms-free sleep easily, whether they have been swaddled with arms up or arms down. As a '5-in-1' transition suit, it has been designed to be the most versatile transition suit available today.

Why do the SELF-SOOTHING™ SLEEVES seem too short? Is this correct?

The SELF-SOOTHING™ SLEEVES on the SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION SUIT have been specially designed to be slightly short for your baby's arms so that when the cuffs are folded over and they try to straighten their arms completely, they feel the edges of the fabric and can push against it. This provides sensory input and a feeling of safety and comfort while still allowing them to self-soothe safely without scratching their delicate skin.

How do I care for the SWADDLE UP™ TRANSITION BAG/SUIT range?

Wash before first use. Close zippers before washing. Warm gentle machine wash in wash bag with similar colors. Do not soak. Do not bleach. Tumble dry on low (for warm garments: for quicker drying tumble dry inside out on second cycle). Warm iron if necessary. Do not iron zipper. Do not dry clean. Wash immediately after every use.

Can I buy replacement wings for my Transition Bag or Suit?

We don’t currently hold stock of the wings online, but please click here to reach out to our Customer Care Team here who will assist.
